Does Google refund invalid clicks?

Mostly no, but you are not meant to pay for them either. Google removes invalid clicks it catches before the month ends from your bill. If it finds invalid traffic later, it gives a credit “where appropriate and possible”. If you think it missed some, you can file an investigation request for the last 60 days.

The three ways Google handles invalid clicks

StageWhat happensWhat you do
Caught before month endRemoved from billing and campaign reports automatically. Google: “no refunds are necessary.”Nothing. See where to check invalid clicks.
Found after the invoiceA credit “where appropriate and possible”, shown as a billing adjustment on invoices and in account transactions.Look for “Invalid activity” lines.
You suspect it was missedGoogle specialists review traffic from the last 60 days. It typically takes several business days. You get an email with findings, and a notice of any credits.Submit an invalid traffic investigation request within 60 days of the activity.

Steps if you suspect missed invalid clicks

  1. Pick the date range. The request covers activity within the last 60 days, so check older spikes first.
  2. Note which campaigns look wrong: a cost jump with no matching rise in conversions, or clicks that never produce sessions in your analytics.
  3. Submit the investigation request from your Google Ads account (see the help page above for the current form).
  4. Wait for the email. A credit, if any, shows up as an adjustment on a later invoice.

Steps 1 and 2 are general good practice, not Google requirements. Google decides what counts as invalid, so a request can end with no credit.

The agency problem

Each client account has its own invoice, credits and 60-day clock. Collecting that evidence by hand for every client is slow, and a client asking “what did you save us?” has no single answer. That per-client reporting gap is what the Clickward concept is testing. It is an early concept with no product yet.

FAQ

Does Google refund invalid clicks?

Not as a refund in the usual sense. Google's help page says invalid traffic detected before the end of the month is removed from billing automatically, "so no refunds are necessary". Invalid traffic found after an invoice is handled with a credit "where appropriate and possible".

How long do I have to ask Google to investigate?

An invalid traffic investigation request covers activity within the last 60 days.

How long does an investigation take?

Google says it typically takes several business days, and you receive an email with the findings when it ends.

Where do I see a credit?

Credits appear as billing adjustments on invoices and in account transactions.

Can a third-party tool get me a bigger credit?

Google decides what counts as invalid. A third-party tool can flag traffic Google considers valid, and that flagged traffic is not automatically credited by Google. Clickward is an early concept with no product, so it makes no claim here.
